About this server
Short version: quassel.io is a small, privately operated Matrix homeserver run as a hobby — not a company, not a product. The notes below are here so you can decide whether to trust it with your account.
Who runs it
quassel.io is operated by Hannes Thöne — a private individual based in Warburg, Germany. I run this server because I enjoy administering infrastructure and want to support the Matrix protocol with another welcoming public homeserver. Full contact details are on the Impressum.
How it's funded
Out of my own pocket. There are no ads, no tracking, no premium tier, and no donations being collected. The server runs on solid dedicated hardware, and keeping it online is comfortably within what I'm happy to spend on a hobby — so funding isn't the bottleneck here.
How young it is
quassel.io launched on 24 April 2026, so the server is brand new. If you'd rather wait until there's a longer track record, that's a fair call. If you'd like to help shape a small server from day one, you're very welcome.
Backups
The server data is backed up daily to a Hetzner Storage Box located in Germany.
Updates
Synapse is checked for security and feature updates on a regular cadence, so the homeserver stays close to the latest stable release.
